 About Al-Azhar Mosque

 Al-Azhar Mosque was built between 970 and 972 CE by Jawhar al-Siqilli on the orders of the Fatimid Caliph al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah. It quickly became the principal mosque of Fatimid Cairo. The adjacent Al-Azhar University, established in 988 CE, is considered the world's oldest continuously operating university and remains the supreme authority of Sunni Islam worldwide. The mosque has been expanded by successive dynasties and today features five minarets representing different architectural eras.
