A Nikah is an Islamic marriage contract. It does not automatically change either spouse’s surname. A religious-only Nikah certificate also differs from a registered civil marriage certificate, although a religious ceremony can be legally recognised if the required civil procedures are followed. Does Islam require a surname change after Nikah?
No. Keeping your existing surname is allowed; taking your husband’s surname is a personal decision, not a condition of Nikah. Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta says a married woman may use her husband’s family name for identification if it does not falsely claim a different lineage. Can a Nikah certificate change the name on a UK passport?

HMPO may request further evidence. A registered marriage certificate can also support a spouse’s surname or a qualifying double-barrelled surname.
