How does the Hijri calendar work?

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It determines the dates of Ramadan, Eid, Hajj, and other Islamic observances. Years are labelled AH (Anno Hegirae — year of the Hijra).

The calendar began with the Hijra — the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ migration from Mecca to Medina — in 622 CE, established by Caliph Umar (RA) for administrative and religious unity.
