Eid al-Fitr Prayer Guide
Eid al-Fitr prayer (Salat al-Eid) is performed in congregation after sunrise — ideally about 15–20 minutes after sunrise. It is Wajib (obligatory) for men according to the Hanafi school, and Sunnah Mu'akkadah (strongly recommended) in other schools. It is performed in an open ground (musalla) or mosque.
Structure of Eid Prayer (Hanafi)
1st Rakat
- Opening Takbir (Takbir al-Ihram)
- 3 additional Takbeers (hands raised each time, lowered between them)
- Silently recite Thana after opening Takbir
- Recite Al-Fatiha + another Surah (e.g. Surah Al-A'la)
- Ruku, Sujud as normal
2nd Rakat
- Recite Al-Fatiha + another Surah (e.g. Surah Al-Ghashiyah)
- 3 additional Takbeers before going to Ruku
- Ruku, Sujud as normal
- Final Tashahud and Tasleem
Zakat al-Fitr — Obligatory Eid Charity
Zakat al-Fitr (also called Sadaqat al-Fitr or Fitrana) is an obligatory charity payable by every Muslim on behalf of themselves and their dependants before the Eid prayer. It must be paid before the Eid prayer to count as Zakat al-Fitr; given after, it counts as regular sadaqah.
Amount
2.5 kg of staple food (wheat, rice, dates, barley, raisins) or its cash equivalent per person
Who must pay
Every Muslim who has food beyond their needs for that day and night — for themselves and all dependants (children, elderly parents, servants)
Deadline
Must be given before the Eid prayer on 1 Shawwal. Best: give during the last days of Ramadan so recipients can use it for Eid
Takbeer al-Eid
The Takbeer is recited from the night before Eid (after the last Maghrib of Ramadan) until the Imam begins the Eid prayer.
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.
