About Masjid Farooq-e-Azam (Burnley Central Mosque)
Masjid Farooq-e-Azam, widely known locally as the Burnley Central Mosque, was established in 1975 by the town's growing Muslim community and is one of Burnley's longest-serving and most prominent mosques. It occupies a sandstone building on North Street that was originally constructed in 1878 as a Baptist Sunday and Day School, attached to the adjacent Victorian Baptist chapel. Over the decades the congregation expanded from a single floor of the former madrasah building to the full three-storey premises in use today, adding a dedicated sisters' entrance and a busy Islamic school. The historic building is now Grade II listed by Historic England, reflecting both its architectural value and its place in Burnley's heritage.
The mosque is housed in a Grade II listed building, originally built in 1878 as a Baptist Sunday and Day School before being converted for Muslim worship in 1975. It is one of Burnley's central and oldest-established mosques, commonly referred to simply as the Burnley Central Mosque. The mosque operates its own broadcast/radio system and streams weekly and monthly programmes online, alongside running a long-standing Madrasah.
