History of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque
The mosque was originally built in 1775 over the tomb of the Andalusian Sufi scholar Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi (1219–1287), who settled in Alexandria after fleeing the Christian reconquest of Spain. The current building, completed in 1943, is one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in Alexandria, with four domes and a central minaret.
