About the Islamic Calendar

The Islamic calendar (also called the Hijri calendar — Arabic: التقويم الهجري) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used worldwide by Muslims to determine the correct days for Islamic holidays and rituals — including Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Hajj pilgrimage.

The calendar began from the year of the Hijra — the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. The current Hijri year is 1447–1448 AH (2026 CE). Because the Islamic calendar is 10–11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, Islamic dates shift earlier each solar year, completing a full cycle approximately every 33 years.

There are four sacred months in the Islamic calendar: Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. During these months, rewards for worship are multiplied.
