About Zakat — the Third Pillar
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — mandatory annual charity for Muslims whose wealth exceeds the nisab (minimum threshold). It purifies wealth and supports the poor, orphans, and those in debt.
Allah says: "Establish prayer and give Zakat" (Quran 2:43). The Prophet ﷺ described withholding Zakat as a cause of drought and hardship (Tabarani).

- Gold and silver (jewellery — scholars differ; Hanafi includes all gold/silver)

- Business inventory and trade goods
- Money owed to you that you expect to recover
What Zakat does not cover
- Primary residence and personal vehicle
- Personal clothing, furniture, and household items
- Tools and equipment you use to earn a living
- Pension funds you cannot access (scholars differ on accessible pensions)
