About Zakat — the Third Pillar

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — mandatory annual charity for Muslims whose wealth exceeds the nisab (minimum threshold). It purifies wealth and supports the poor, orphans, and those in debt.

Allah says: "Establish prayer and give Zakat" (Quran 2:43). The Prophet ﷺ described withholding Zakat as a cause of drought and hardship (Tabarani).

Zakat FAQ

Do I pay Zakat on my salary?
You pay Zakat on savings accumulated from salary that remain above nisab for one lunar year — not on each paycheck as it arrives. Deduct immediate debts due within the year from your total.
Can I pay Zakat in instalments?
Yes, if you have calculated the full amount due, you may pay it across Ramadan or the year. The intention (niyyah) should be for Zakat.
Who can receive Zakat?
The Quran (9:60) lists eight categories: the poor, the needy, Zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and stranded travellers.
