History of Ibn Tulun Mosque
Ibn Tulun Mosque was commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun, the Abbasid governor of Egypt, and completed in 879 CE. It is the oldest mosque in Cairo that survives in its original form and one of the oldest in the world. The mosque's defining feature is its external spiral minaret — the only one of its kind in Egypt — said to be modelled on the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq. The vast courtyard can accommodate up to 100,000 worshippers.
