How to Pray Jummah

Jummah (Friday prayer) replaces Dhuhr for Muslim men in congregation. It includes a khutbah (sermon) followed by 2 fard rak'ahs — the most important weekly gathering in Islam.

Fard

2 rak'ahs in congregation (replaces Dhuhr fard)

Sunnah before

4 rak'ahs (Hanafi: 4; others: 2+2)

Sunnah after

4 rak'ahs (Hanafi: 4; others: 2+2)

Step-by-Step

1

Prepare and arrive early

Perform Wudu (ghusl on Friday is Sunnah for men). Wear clean clothes, apply perfume (Sunnah for men), and arrive before the adhan or khutbah. Read Surah Al-Kahf if you have not yet — it is Sunnah on Friday.

2

Pray sunnah before Jummah

Pray 4 rak'ahs sunnah at home or in the mosque before the khutbah (some pray 2+2). If you arrive after the khutbah starts, do not pray sunnah — sit and listen.

3

Listen to the khutbah

The imam delivers two khutbahs (sermons) standing, then sits briefly between them. Remain silent — no talking, no phone use. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When the imam comes out, the angels come to listen."

4

Pray 2 fard rak'ahs

Stand in rows behind the imam. The imam recites Al-Fatihah and another surah aloud in both rak'ahs. Follow the imam through ruku, sujud, and tashahhud. Tasleem ends Jummah fard.

5

Pray sunnah after & make du'a

Pray 4 rak'ahs sunnah after (or 2+2). Friday has an hour when du'a is accepted — often said to be the last hour before Maghrib. Send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ abundantly on Friday.

Jummah FAQ

What if I miss Jummah?
If you miss Jummah without a valid excuse, pray 4 rak'ahs Dhuhr fard instead (the normal Dhuhr prayer). Valid excuses include illness, travel, fear, or being unable to reach the mosque.
Can I pray Jummah at work or a small group?
Jummah requires a minimum congregation (typically 3+ adult men beyond the imam, per most schools) and must be held in a place where Jummah is established. A regular workplace room may not qualify unless it meets local scholarly conditions.
Is Dhuhr still prayed if I attend Jummah?
No — the 2 fard rak'ahs of Jummah replace the 4 fard rak'ahs of Dhuhr for those who validly attend Jummah.
