About Masjid Raya Baiturrahman
Masjid Raya Baiturrahman has stood at the heart of Banda Aceh for centuries. Rebuilt in Mughal style by the Dutch in 1881 after the original was destroyed, it expanded to seven domes by 1994. When the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated Banda Aceh, the mosque survived — thousands sheltered inside — and became a global symbol of resilience and iman.
