About Masjid Agung Demak

Masjid Agung Demak was built by the nine Wali Songo saints who spread Islam across Java. Its tiered Javanese roof (tumpang) rather than a dome reflects deliberate acculturation of Islam with local tradition. The "soko tatal" pillar — assembled from wood offcuts — has stood for over 500 years. The mosque remains an active place of worship and one of Indonesia's most visited ziarah sites.
