History of Masjid Istiqlal
Masjid Istiqlal (Mosque of Independence) was built to mark Indonesia's independence from Dutch colonial rule. Designed by the Christian architect Friedrich Silaban — symbolising religious harmony — and inaugurated in 1978, the mosque is the largest in Southeast Asia. Its single dome, 45 metres in diameter, represents the year of Indonesian independence (1945). With a capacity of 120,000 worshippers, it hosts one of the largest Eid congregations in the world.
