Masjid Al-Akbar (The Grand Mosque) was built between 1995 and 2000 to serve as the main congregational mosque for Surabaya. Its centrepiece is a large turquoise dome flanked by four smaller domes and a towering minaret. With a total capacity of 59,000, it is the second-largest mosque in Indonesia after Istiqlal in Jakarta.
