History of Masjid Gedhe Kauman
Masjid Gedhe Kauman was founded in 1773 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, the first Sultan of Yogyakarta. As the official mosque of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, it sits immediately west of the Kraton (royal palace) and has been the spiritual centre of the city for over 250 years. The mosque is built in traditional Javanese architecture with a distinctive multi-tiered joglo roof rather than a dome, symbolising the synthesis of Javanese and Islamic culture.
