History of Faisal Mosque
The Faisal Mosque was built between 1976 and 1986 with funding from Saudi Arabia's King Faisal ibn Abdul Aziz, after whom it is named. Designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, its distinctive contemporary design — resembling a Bedouin tent surrounded by four minarets — broke away from traditional domed mosque architecture. With a capacity of 300,000, it was the largest mosque in the world from 1986 to 1993.
