About Dome of the Rock Mosque

The Dome of the Rock was built by the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan in 691 CE, making it one of the oldest surviving examples of Islamic architecture in the world. The shrine covers the sacred rock (Al-Sakhrah) from which the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is believed to have ascended to the heavens during the Miraj (part of the Isra and Miraj). The building's octagonal plan, Byzantine-inspired mosaics, and famous golden dome have inspired Islamic architecture for 1,300 years. It is not a mosque in the traditional sense but a shrine (mashhad) that Muslims visit for its immense spiritual significance.
