About Jumma Masjid (Batley Carr)

Jumma Masjid traces its origins to 1962, when the local Muslim community bought a derelict warehouse on Bradford Road in Batley Carr for around £1,500 and spent roughly two years restoring the dilapidated building before it opened as a mosque in 1964. It is recognised as one of the earliest established mosques in Britain; before it opened, local Muslims had to hold Friday, Tarawih and Eid prayers in town halls, private homes and even borrowed church spaces. The masjid is closely tied to the Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS), which was formed in 1957 and regards it as its first masjid location, and it grew out of a small free Madrassah started in 1961 by Maulana Ebrahim Navsarka. Today it remains a daily place of worship and Islamic education serving the Batley Carr community.

One of the first mosques to be established in the United Kingdom, opening in 1964 after a two-year community renovation of a derelict Bradford Road warehouse bought for about £1,500. Closely linked to the Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS, founded 1957), which considers Jumma Masjid its very first masjid location. The mosque grew out of a tiny free Madrassah founded in 1961 that began by teaching just eight local children Islamic studies at no cost.
