About Zakariyya Jaame Masjid

Zakariyya Jaame Masjid (full registered name: The Islamic Cultural Centre Zakariyya Jaam'e Masjid) is widely regarded as the central mosque of Bolton, Greater Manchester. It is named after the Deobandi hadith scholar Shaykh Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya (Rahmahullah). The associated charity, the Islamic Cultural Centre (ICC), traces its founding to 1969, making it one of the earliest established Muslim institutions in the town. It is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales under number 258624; its current governing scheme is dated 29 November 1993 (amended 31 March 2012), and its charitable purposes are to advance the Islamic faith and to promote education within a ten-mile radius of the centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton.

The mosque sits at 20 Peace Street in central Bolton (BL3 5LJ). Its purpose-built premises were constructed at a cost reported as up to £3 million, with the funds raised entirely by the local Muslim community, and the building is described as having capacity for up to 3,000 worshippers. The masjid is described as having marked the beginning of the ICC, which went on to support communities in other parts of Bolton in establishing further mosques and places of worship. The majority of those who attend follow the Deobandi tradition, although worshippers of other Sunni and Ahl-e-Hadith backgrounds also pray there.

Beyond daily and Friday congregational prayers, the centre functions as a mosque, madrasah and Islamic cultural centre. It provides Islamic education for children and adults (including Madrasah classes, Tajweed and Dars-e-Quran), runs an "Ask Mufti" service and a library, and handles community responsibilities such as marriage and funeral arrangements. It also acts as a point of contact for local groups, agencies and authorities. For the financial year ending 30 November 2024 the charity reported total income of around £972,000 and employed 21 staff with 14 trustees.
