About Dar Ul Isra Mosque

Dar Ul-Isra (DUI) Muslim Educational & Welfare Centre is a Sunni mosque and multi-functional community hub in the heart of Cathays, Cardiff. It was established in 1989 to unify and serve the city's Muslim community, growing out of an effort by a group of local students (several of whom had come to Cardiff for postgraduate study) and businessmen who came together to buy the building when it came up for sale at a time when there were no mosques on the north side of the city.

The premises occupy a former Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel built in 1899, which was opened as a mosque in 1988. The building has since undergone substantial internal and external changes, though it retains much of its Victorian chapel character. The original single-storey hall accommodated up to around 300 worshippers plus a separate room for women holding roughly 80; the centre today is listed with a capacity of about 600.

The mosque is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales as "Darul Isra Muslim Community Centre Trust" (charity no. 1133380, governed by a trust deed dated 14 October 2009) and is associated with the UK Islamic Mission (UKIM). Its stated charitable work spans religious services, education and training, youth development, social welfare and community cohesion across Cardiff.

Beyond the five daily prayers and Friday Jummah, Dar Ul-Isra runs an active programme of activities: Qur'an and Arabic classes, a Qur'an memorisation programme, study circles (halaqas) in English and Arabic, youth provision including Scouts, wellness and sports sessions, Ramadan iftars and Eid celebrations, interfaith tours, and services such as nikah and funeral arrangements, counselling and guidance for new Muslims. Halls and seminar rooms are available for community hire.
