About Masjid-e-Noor (Gloucester Muslim Welfare Association)
Masjid-e-Noor traces its roots to the Gloucester Muslim Welfare Association, formed in the early 1960s as the city's first generation of Muslim settlers arranged congregational prayers and religious classes in hired halls along Ryecroft Street. After years of fundraising, helped by a donation from a Kuwaiti benefactor, the community replaced a pair of condemned houses at 44-46 Ryecroft Street with a purpose-built mosque that opened in 1983 — described as the first purpose-built mosque in the South West of England and Wales. A major extension and renovation completed around 2015-16 expanded its capacity to roughly 1,000 worshippers, and it remains a central hub for Gloucester's Muslim community.
Widely cited as the first purpose-built mosque in the South West of England and Wales, opened in 1983. It was built on the site of two condemned semi-detached houses at 44-46 Ryecroft Street, with construction funded largely through community fundraising plus a donation from a Kuwaiti Sheikh. A 2015-16 extension and renovation increased its capacity to around 1,000 worshippers, and the managing Gloucester Muslim Welfare Association also runs associated educational institutions including an Islamic girls' secondary school and primary school.
