About Jamia Masjid Al-Madina

Jamia Masjid Al-Madina occupies a striking Victorian building that was originally raised in 1900 as the Church of England's St Michael and All Angels church. During the 1970s members of Middlesbrough's growing Pakistani community acquired and converted it, and it opened as the town's second mosque in 1976. Beyond daily prayers it has long doubled as a community hub for the surrounding Muslim population. In 2010 the building was added to Middlesbrough Council's Local List in recognition of its local historical and architectural importance.

The mosque is housed in a former Church of England church (St Michael and All Angels), built in 1900 and adapted for Islamic worship in the 1970s. In 2010 it was added to Middlesbrough Council's Local List as a building of local historical or architectural importance. It is one of Middlesbrough's largest mosques, with directory listings citing capacity for roughly 4,500 worshippers, and it is notable enough to hold its own Wikipedia entry.
