About Brixton Mosque

The community traces its origins to the mid-1970s, when reverts to Islam — including Sheikh Mohammad Kamaludin and Hamid Abdallah — began dawah work within the Afro-Caribbean community in South London. In 1990 they acquired and refurbished a neglected building at 1 Gresham Road, registering it as a charity and beginning the five daily prayers under their first imam, Shaykh Salah Jamah. The mosque became known for inviting students of Shaykh al-Albani to teach the Salafi manhaj and has long been led largely by Black British converts. It gained international media attention in connection with several individuals who briefly attended in the 1990s before being ejected, and its leadership has been noted for its anti-extremism stance and community outreach.
