Brick Lane Jamme Masjid

Brick Lane Jamme Masjid occupies one of London's most historically significant religious buildings. The current structure on Brick Lane was built in 1743 as a Huguenot chapel for French Protestant refugees fleeing persecution. It subsequently became a Methodist chapel, then a synagogue serving the Jewish immigrant community of Spitalfields, and finally a mosque in 1976 when the area became home to a large Bangladeshi Muslim community — a remarkable 280-year arc of religious history in a single building.

Today the mosque is a cornerstone of the Bangladeshi Muslim community in Tower Hamlets and wider East London, providing five daily prayers, multiple Friday Jumu'ah sessions, Quranic education for children and adults, welfare support, and a range of community services. Its iconic location on Brick Lane — one of London's most visited streets — makes it a point of pilgrimage for both Muslims and those interested in London's multicultural history.
