About London Central Mosque (Regent's Park)

London Central Mosque, often known as Regent's Park Mosque, is one of the most recognisable Islamic landmarks in the United Kingdom. The site was donated to the British Muslim community in 1944 by King George VI, in exchange for a London site for the new Anglican Cathedral in Cairo. The building was designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, whose elegant gold dome and slender minaret have become an iconic feature of the Regent's Park skyline.

After more than three decades of fundraising and planning, the mosque was officially opened in 1977 by King Khalid of Saudi Arabia. The main prayer hall can accommodate over 5,000 worshippers and is renowned for its calligraphy, Persian-style chandelier and quiet, contemplative atmosphere.

Today the mosque is part of the Islamic Cultural Centre, which has been a hub of religious, educational and interfaith activity in London since 1944. Alongside the daily prayers and busy Friday Jumu'ah, it hosts a library, a halal restaurant, marriage and conversion services, and a long-running programme of lectures and visits from schools, charities and dignitaries from around the world.
